National Diabetes Month

November is National Diabetes month, and this month I would like to talk about how nutrition and what we eat can affect the onset of diabetes or help control it. Diabetes is a condition that occurs when the body is unable to use/and or produce insulin which is a substance that is required by the body to use the food for energy.
There are two types of diabetes, type one and type two. The first is an autoimmune disorder where the cells in the body that produce insulin are destroyed, causing blood sugar levels to build. Type two diabetes is caused by lifestyle factors such as physical inactivity and being overweight or obese.

The best way to prevent the onset of diabetes is to eat a variety of foods from Canada’s Food Guide, and get regular physical activity. Eating foods like fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains and low fat dairy products provides the basis of over good health and prevention of diseases such as diabetes. Limiting the amount of high fat and high sugar foods we eat like, cakes, cookies, fast food and chips will decrease the chance of nutrition related health problems like diabetes.
